Oat tops are the milky tops of the oat plant. Avena sativa has been cultivated and consumed as a cereal grain for thousands of years. The young, milky oat tops are known for their nourishing, calming and restorative properties. Traditionally, milky oats are used when one is physically and mentally exhausted and depeleted and are needing support in building the nervous system back.
Oat tops are commonly used in tincturing; however, they can also be used as a tonic in an infusion or tea. Oat seed is best infused overnight to allow for the extraction of calcium and silica. When used as a tonic it is important to take the herb for an extended period of time so that one can obtain maximal support.
